Small moves

Man and van in Dover and the CT villages.

The thing we get asked for most. One van, one or two of us, and an hour or three of carrying — for a flat, a single room, a part load, or one item that will not go in a car.

Not every move needs a removal lorry and four people. A lot of what happens in a town like Dover is smaller than that: someone leaving a shared house, a flat changing hands, a bed and a sofa going from one end of Buckland to the other, a student's boxes heading to Canterbury for term.

Those are quick jobs when they are planned and miserable ones when they are not. The difference is almost always the stairs and the parking.

What people book it for

  • A one or two-bed flat, start to finish
  • A single room out of a shared house
  • One large awkward item — a sofa, a wardrobe, an American fridge, a workbench
  • Collections from shops, trade counters and marketplace sellers
  • Part loads sharing a van with another job on the same route
  • The last of it, after the main removal has already gone
  • Small office and studio moves

Dover specifics

The town centre and the streets running up from it are the recurring problem. Castle Street, Snargate Street and the roads climbing toward the Western Heights have limited stopping, and some of the terraces have a front door straight onto a narrow pavement with traffic behind you. Up at Tower Hamlets and Buckland it opens out and gets easier. Out in the villages — Whitfield, River, Temple Ewell — it is mostly straightforward driveways.

We ask which floor, whether there is a lift, and where the van can legally sit. Those three answers set the price more than the distance does.

Going further than Kent

If the load is small but the destination is abroad, a man-and-van job is the wrong shape — a part load on a consolidated cross-channel service will serve you better. That is on the cross-channel page. For a whole house, see house removals; for an apartment with stairs, flat removals.

Man and van questions

One man or two?
Whatever the heaviest item needs. A few boxes and a desk is one. A sofa bed coming down three flights off Castle Street is not, and sending one person would just waste your morning and ours. Tell us the biggest thing and which floor it is on.
Can you collect from a shop or a warehouse?
Yes — furniture shops, trade counters, marketplace pickups, the retail park at Whitfield. If there is a collection window or a reference number, put it in the notes so we build the run around it.
Do you take a part load to London or further?
We do, and sharing a van with another job on the same route is often the sensible way to move a small amount a long way. Ask and we will tell you what is already going your direction.
Will you help carry or is it drop-off only?
We carry — that is the service. What we will not do is attempt something that genuinely needs proper lifting kit with two people and optimism. We will say so and suggest the right answer instead.
Is it suitable for a whole house?
Rarely. Once you are past a small flat, doing it in van-loads costs more in hours than a proper house removal does, and we will tell you if you have outgrown it rather than take the booking.

Two addresses, the floor at each end, and the heaviest item. That is enough for us to put a figure on it.
